Parathyroid hormone (iPTH)

Intact PTH

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a peptide hormone which is synthesised in the parathyroid glands. The main function of PTH is to increase the concentration of calcium in the blood plasma. Intact PTH (iPTH) is the biologically active form and is secreted when the calcium level is low.

The determination of iPTH is the most important serological test for the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism. It also supports the serodiagnostic clarification of secondary hyperparathyroidism and tertiary hyperparathyroidism. Further, used in combination with 25-OH vitamin D determination and supplemented by calcitonin determination, it allows assessment of bone metabolism disorders and diseases, in particular osteoporosis.

The quantitative determination of iPTH in serum with the Intact PTH ELISA can be fully automated
