After a longer break due to the COVID protection measures, case numbers now return to their pre-pandemic levels in many countries.
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) for EU/EEA more than 25,000 cases of pertussis were reported in 2023, and more than 32,000 between January and March 2024.1
Despite overall high vaccination rates (against the causative agent Bordetella (B.) pertussis), the disease remains one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths worldwide. Unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated babies under one year of age are most at risk of serious illness and death. In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 151,074 whooping cough cases globally and estimated that there were 89,000 deaths due to the disease.2

As whooping cause often does not present with the classic symptoms, particularly in adults, but also in older children and adolescents, laboratory diagnostics are crucial to support a diagnosis.
EUROIMMUN provides PCR-based direct pathogen detection and various serological test systems as well as corresponding automation solutions for reliable whooping cough diagnostics.
