To date, approximately 317,000 cases of chikungunya virus infection and over 135 associated deaths have been reported in 20251.
Since 2004, chikungunya virus outbreaks have become more frequent and widespread and have occured in over 110 countries in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe2.
Although the disease reveals a very low case fatality rate of less than 1%, a significant number of patients develop long-lasting or even chronic joint pain, similar to arthritis, which has a severe impact on the patient’s quality of life3.
Apart from joint pain, chikungunya virus infection causes very similar symptoms to dengue and Zika, which is why it is often misdiagnosed2.
