Alpha amylase

Alpha amylase in saliva

The secretion of alpha amylase in saliva (salivary alpha amylase, sAA) is associated with the activity of the vegetative (sympathetic and parasympathetic) nervous system, thus stress can be indirectly measured. The effectiveness of psychotherapeutic stress therapy and drug treatment of autonomic stress responses can be monitored by investigation of the sAA titer.

The determination of sAA in saliva with the Alpha Amylase Saliva ELISA can be fully automated.

For comprehensive stress diagnostics, the sAA determination should be supplementary to the measurement of free cortisol, in order to indirectly establish the extent of the individual physiopathological effect of stress (stress reactivity).
